Shishas with V2A and V4A stainless steel – what’s the difference?

Shishas mit V2A- und V4A-Edelstahl – Wo liegt der Unterschied?

You have probably come across the designations V2A or V4A in the product descriptions of shishas with stainless steel elements. Anyone who is not particularly familiar with the manufacturing sector might be wondering what these abbreviations are all about. That's why here is a brief overview of what the abbreviations stand for, what differentiates them and why we use V4A stainless steel at Dschinni.

V2A vs. V4A: That’s behind the abbreviations

As already indicated, V2A and V4A are stainless steel types with certain alloys. This is where the name comes from: There was an attempt to produce austenitic steel types by alloying iron, chromium and nickel. So the V stands for attempt and the A for austenite. An austenite is a type of steel whose main alloying elements are chromium and nickel. So there's actually not that much hidden behind the abbreviation.

V2A stainless steel and its properties

V2A therefore stands for “Test Melt 2, Austenite” and V2A stainless steel is alloyed with nickel and chromium. V2A stainless steel is a material that is used very often because it is very easy to process. Many stainless household items, such as sinks and cutlery, are made from this. But the shisha industry didn't want to miss out on the advantages of the stainless material either. However, V2A is not resistant to chlorides, which is why the material was upgraded with the metal molybdenum so that it can also be used in swimming pools and other areas.

V4A stainless steel: advantages and disadvantages for shisha production

The upgrade with molybdenum resulted in V4A stainless steel, which is extremely corrosion-resistant and is therefore perfect for use in swimming pools, salt water or the chemical industry. One disadvantage: V4A can be easily bent, similar to V2A, but its machinability, i.e. machining by milling, turning or drilling, is very poor, which is reflected in the production costs. Stainless steel elements in water pipes in particular are often elaborately processed to achieve a certain appearance and can therefore be expensive. Apart from that, V4A stainless steel offers numerous advantages. Among other things, the material is harder and more stable than other stainless steel alloys and therefore promises a longer service life. In addition - and this is a very important point when it comes to enjoying shisha - V4A is food-safe and therefore completely tasteless and odorless. This means you can really taste the pure aroma of your shisha tobacco , without any irritating flavor distortions. And, as if that wasn't enough, V4A is easier than average to clean. This means you can easily smoke different types of tobacco without worrying about stubborn deposits that would also affect your taste experience.
